I have a love for creating in the kitchen, even if it’s someone else’s recipe. I got into doing sourdough back in 2023. It was something that I became interested in back in 2006 when I lived in Philadelphia. I didn’t do it back then because creating my own starter seemed too complicated. Fast forward to 2023 and someone I had been following online for years because of her makeup tutorials was creating her own sourdough starter from scratch. People started asking her if she would sell it, and one day she told us it was available for sale. I purchased it along with some seeds for the garden, and I have kept it alive since then.
Within the past year, I have really been leaning into my sourdough journey where I’ve tried to convert as many things as possible into sourdough. I have dehydrated some of my starter and shared with my sister and one of her co-workers in Japan. My sister really surprised me by even wanting any starter and she’s got hers alive and well and has even shared with a few others in Japan who needed some. I have someone about two hours away from me who was interested in starting sourdough, so I shared some of my live starter with her so she could start on her journey.
I have enjoyed sharing my love of sourdough with others. Sourdough requires time and patience because it is a wild yeast that takes time to get your dough ready for baking. If you are impatient, there are many discard recipes out there that can be tried without having to wait on dough to properly ferment using a sourdough starter. I always keep commercial yeast on hand so that I can go from dough to a final baked product rather quickly because if you do not plan ahead with sourdough, you are planning to fail.
To all of my friends and family who have/had no knowledge of sourdough prior to me trying it, thank you for listening to my enthusiasm surrounding sourdough with all of the language about feeding 1:1:1, 1:3:3, growing, discarding, etc. I know it has probably been confusing, but y’all might know a little more now than when you first heard me talking and sat there with a dazed and confused look on your face.
That’s all I’ve got for now.
Until next time,
It’s Me
